The Daily Brew Coffeehouse on the corner of Milwaukee Avenue and North Pine Street (AKA Hwy 36 & Hwy 11)in Historic Downtown Burlington, Wisconsin is owned and operated by us - Pat & Kris Clark. We moved here from a resort town, Saugatuck, Michigan in part because we wanted a year-round community. We wanted to connect with others on a family level. WOW, did that work! We've become part of the community and all that that entails. We've been to weddings, watched babies grow, watched kids turn into adults, heard voices drop and witnessed growth spurts. We've had 2 first dates here turn into beautiful marriages. We've cheered on marathon runners, baseball teams and truck pullers. We've hosted bridal showers and CD release parties. Along the way we've also been to our share of funerals and hospital rooms. Exactly what community is all about.
Pat (Patrick, the boy) was born in upstate New York and to this day thanks his Mom for getting him out of that snow filled mess as soon as she could. Pat was 4 months old. He grew up in Portage Michigan a suburb of Kalamazoo. He picked up a guitar at 14, a saxophone at 20 and a bunch of other instruments through the years. He thumbed his way to California, more than once, and somehow ended up in Holland, Michigan where a postcard from a dating service showed up in his mailbox and ...
Kris (Kristine, the girl) was born and raised in Milwaukee, went to Catholic Grade School, High School and College. Then did the quad state tour, living in Michigan, Minnesota & Illinois before settling back in Michigan where a postcard from a dating service showed up in her mailbox and...
...so, we met, dated, fell in love, married and bought a Bed & Breakfast and Ice Cream Shop in Saugatuck. A great way to earn a living, being around people who are trying to have fun on their vacations. Here we hope that a stop in our little coffeehouse will help start the day on a happy note for our customers, our Brew Buddies. We want to make them smile.
Several years ago, we stopped in Burlington to visit friends. We were shopping for a new place to live, smallish and between Milwaukee and Chicago and the charming downtown, pretty river, parks and church steeples fit the bill.
Our original thought was to open a used book store and maybe put a coffee bar in it. Instead, an existing coffeehouse went on the market and we figured we would do it backwards. The used book store is still on hold, but in the meantime we seem to have turned into a gallery, meeting site and concert venue! While a structure of some sort or other has been shown on maps on our corner since 1858, the current building was erected in 1906 when Henry F. Woeste bought the woodworking shop of W. J. Pieters. Mr. Woeste commissioned William Hoppe to design this building to be used as a saloon. The building remained a saloon/tavern until 1996 when Burlington Travel opened. We are selling liquids again, just of a less regulated nature.
